Double trap or D-trap, a recent shotgun discipline |
The double trap or D-trap is the last shotgun discipline welcomed into the Olympic Games. Shooters alternate themeselves in 5 platforms as in the olympic trench. Shooter must shot, with the two shots of their shotgun, two targets that are thrown simultaneusly by the trap machines. The trayectory of the clays is fixed and convergent, while the trap machines are located in the so called "bunker" that is 15 meters from the shooters.
Every double trap field is equipped by two trap machines that throw the "doubles" (a couple of clays) on the basis of three schemas specified by the Double trap rules (schema type A machines 7 and 8, schema
type B machines 8 and 9, schema type C machines
7 and 9). The competition is developed in a day, in the following way: the men's competition sees a serie composed by 50 targets; the shooters shot to 150 targets and the first six classified partecipate to the final, which consists of another serie of 25 "doubles" that fixes the final classification. The womens' competitions have the series composed by 40 targets and the competition ends to 160 targets.
The Double
Trap, for its great spectacularity, has gained
the olympic dignity to the Olympic Games in Atlanta (1996),
with different classifications for men and women. In Athens 2004, the gold medal was conquered by Ahmed Al Maktoum, from Saudi Arabia.
